The patient is a 27-year-old woman who had abnormal vaginal bleeding six months previously and was reported to have had a missed abortion. A dilation and curettage was performed, which was then followed by a hysterectomy. Her serum hCG prior to surgery was 9.8 mIU/ml (non-pregnant female 0.0 – 1.0 mIU/ml).
