Resources for International ApplicantsEligibility

  • All disciplines practiced by the laboratory at the same location under the same directorship must be listed in the application, and all disciplines will be inspected. The College of American Pathologists does not accredit portions of laboratories.
  • Laboratories must be enrolled in CAP proficiency testing (PT) for all patient reportable tests, when proficiency testing enrollment is required, for a minimum of six months prior to requesting an accreditation application.
  • Each separately accredited laboratory must be enrolled in CAP PT under its own CAP number.
  • A laboratory that would like to become accredited by CAP must submit an Application Request Form along with a non refundable application fee.

Inspector Travel Fees

International laboratories are required to pay for a round trip business class ticket(s) if intercontinental travel is necessary for an inspector(s). The number of inspectors sent from the United States will be based on the volume and/or scope of testing of the laboratory, as well as the availability of trained inspectors in your region.

For inspectors based in the United States, the CAP will make arrangements for air transportation and hotel accommodations for the inspection team. A laboratory may be asked to assist the inspection team in making in-country transportation and hotel accommodations. A letter requesting payment for airfare will be sent to the attention of the laboratory director.

Proficiency Testing/External Quality Asurance

  • Your laboratory is required to enroll in CAP proficiency testing (PT) for all analytes for which PT is required. Refer to the “Guide to CAP Accreditation for International Participants” for information on how to access PT catalogs and determine required PT.
  • Occasionally a PT product cannot be shipped because of governmental restrictions or due to stability issues. In these cases the laboratory must contact the Accreditation Program and ask for guidance on how to meet PT requirements.

Documents Required in English

If English is not the operational language of your laboratory, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Prior to scheduling an inspection, English language translations of the following documents must be available:
    1. Laboratory organizational structure
    2. Instrument List
    3. Quality assurance/improvement programs
    4. Quality Control programs
    5. A sample procedure for each laboratory discipline
  2. Responses to any deficiencies cited at the on-site inspection must be provided in English.
  3. Certain supporting documentation to a deficiency may be in your native language provided that the key elements that demonstrate compliance, as well as titles and major headings are in English.
