About the Award
The CAP Foundation and McKesson announce the availability of an informatics elective for pathology residents.
This one-month elective gives the background and experience for a pathology resident to introduce and implement advanced informatics technology in the clinical laboratory.
The awardee will spend three weeks in a business laboratory setting in Minnesota and one week visiting additional laboratory sites to receive hands on experience of advanced applications in actual pathology practice. The elective rotation can start any time after August 1, 2008 and must be completed by November 1, 2008.
Application Deadline: June 1, 2008
The award notice will be made by July 7th for a start date beginning anytime after August 1, 2008, and completed by November 1, 2008.
Eligibility
Eligible candidates are pathology residents or residents doing fellowships. It is a requirement that candidates have adequate training and experience in informatics. Applicants must be a CAP Junior Member or have submitted completed membership applications. All applicants will be considered regardless of age, race, gender, national origin, or religion.
Funding
The grant will cover living and travel expenses for the month rotation. It is expected that the recipient’s institution will provide salary and benefit support during the award period.
Application Guidelines
Applicants are required to submit and/or complete the following information:
- Submit a curriculum vitae
- Submit Letter of recommendation from program director and/or laboratory medical director.
- Submit a narrative summary (no more than 1,000 words) containing the following information:
- Background in informatics
- Potential use of knowledge gained during rotation
- Value for applicant career
Fellowship Objectives
After the one-month rotation, the resident will be able to:
- Identify the following factors important in introducing and utilizing new information technology in the clinical laboratory.
Effective presentation design
Medical decision support systems and artificial intelligence
Electronic medical record
Digital multimedia and imaging applications
Telepathology and telemedicine
Outcomes research and data mining
Process control, quality control, and quality assurance
- Demonstrate ability to recognize and utilize information concerning new trends and technology in pathology.

Follow-up & Final Report Requirements:
A report is due 30 days after the end of the elective rotation. The paper should be submitted for presentation to CAP’09, APIII, and the Lab InfoTech Summit.
