Advanced Training in Pathology Informatics

Deadline: To be determined.

Award Amount: Allowance provided for travel and living expenses. It is expected that the recipient’s own institution will continue to provide for salary and benefits during the award period.

Purpose: To offer background and experience to pathology residents to introduce and implement advanced informatics technology in the clinical laboratory.

Outcomes and Accomplishments: After the rotation, the resident will be able to:

  • Identify the following factors important in introducing and utilizing new information technology in the clinical laboratory:
    • Effective presentation design
    • Medical decision support systems and artificial intelligence
    • Electronic medical record
    • Digital multimedia and imaging applications
    • Telepathology and telemedicine
    • Outcomes research and data mining
    • Process control, quality control, and quality assurance

  • Demonstrate ability to recognize and utilize information concerning new trends and technology in pathology.

Time Commitment: Four (4) weeks at one of McKesson’s laboratory sites.

Selection Process: Applications will be judged on the following:

  • Merit of application and narrative
  • Education value to the applicant
  • Applicant background and current knowledge of pathology practice
  • Program director’s recommendation

Application Guidelines:  Applications and essays must be typed and include:

  • Completed Application Form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A letter of recommendation from program director and/or laboratory medical director.
  • A narrative summary, not to exceed 1,000 words, containing the following information: 
    • Background in informatics
    • Potential use of knowledge gained during rotation.
    • Value for applicant’s career

Final Reporting Requirements:
A report is due 30 days after the completion of the elective rotation.
