CAP Today

August 2009

The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal on critical tests requires that the organization measure, assess, and, if needed, take action to improve the timeliness of reporting, and the timeliness of receipt by the responsible licensed caregiver, of critical test results. The elements of performance for that goal (NPSG.02.03.01) require that laboratories define their timeliness goals, collect data on their performance, use the data to improve their performance, and measure the improvement.
