PAP/NGC Programs Review
The CAP ’05 annual meeting in Chicago, Sept. 11–15, will offer
many cytopathology courses led by current and former members of the CAP Cytopathology
Committee. The highlight will be Rules and Tools: Cytology Mock Exam, consisting
of six half-day sessions to be held Sept. 10, 11, and 12 to help prepare attendees
for the CMS-required cytology proficiency test. Each session will include a
proctored practice proficiency testing exam, as well as lectures outlining the
CLIA ’88 regulations and grading scheme, diagnostic pitfalls in proficiency
testing, and retesting strategies. This proficiency testing course is included
in the CAP ’05 global fee; however, space is limited and preregistration
is required.
Several video microscopy sessions will be presented, each worth 1.5 CME/CE
hours to attendees. These include Endoscopic Ultrasound Guided FNAB of Pancreatic
Cysts by Martha Pitman, MD, which will feature a case-based approach and emphasize
mucinous cysts, ancillary testing, and pitfalls in diagnosis.
David Wilbur, MD, will offer Body Cavity Fluid Examinations: Problem Patterns
and Their Resolution, and Teresa Darraugh, MD, will hold a microscope tutorial
on anal cytology, with an emphasis on identification of HPV-related lesions
of the anal canal, primarily using liquid-based preparations. Dina Mody, MD,
will present Glandular Lesions in Cervicovaginal Cytology and use conventional,
ThinPrep, and SurePath preparations to review glandular lesions and their benign
mimics. A scientific session, Current Issues in Gynecologic Cytology, will be
offered by Dr. Wilbur and Theresa Voytek, MD, and focus on automated screening
and preparation devices for gynecologic cytology.
