The primary focus of the committee is to increase the pool of qualified candidates to run for an elected office of the College. This includes broadening access to CAP committees through an open application process, identifying members who reflect the needs of the committee through targeted recruiting with review and analysis of committee appointments, and supporting the effectiveness of first time committee members, first time committee chairs, outbound liaisons, and new Board members through orientation programs. In addition, the committee has identified the leadership characteristics that are most important for leadership roles within the College, and promotes development of those characteristics through leadership readings and recommended education programs.
The committee is currently involved in recruiting members with specialized expertise to fill committee openings, and in evaluating and recommending programs that will develop the future leaders of the CAP.
Committee members with broad personal experiences are desirable, as well as a mix of committee members with diverse perspectives. Previous exposure to leadership development initiatives and/or to leadership roles within the CAP is extremely helpful. Enthusiasm for the study and development of leadership capability in others is critical!
The Leadership Development Committee has the opportunity to shape the future of the College of American Pathologists through the identification and support of its leadership initiatives. The future strategy, direction, and actions of the College will be determined by its leaders. Hence, the qualifications and preparedness of those leaders are critical. The Leadership Development Committee will also have a great deal of visibility to the President and Board of the College. Increased insight into the nature of leadership will also benefit committee members in their own practice settings.
Representation on committee beyond the CAP:
