CAP Innovates for Patients, Laboratories
e-LAB Solutions Connect™ Streamlines Input of Quality Metrics
Northfield, IL—“The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is introducing an innovative enhancement that allows laboratories to submit proficiency testing (PT) results directly from instruments to the CAP’s online portal. The CAP will introduce the new feature, e-LAB Solutions Connect™, at the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Annual Meeting July 17, 2012, in Los Angeles.
Laboratories under the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments must regularly participate in PT. More than 22,000 laboratories are enrolled in CAP PT, known as Surveys, including thousands outside of the United States.
“e-LAB Solutions Connect, with automated proficiency testing reporting, streamlines the process, eliminates the potential for clerical errors, and makes reporting proficiency testing a whole lot easier,” said Lisa Berger, MT(ASCP), Site Director for CompuNet Clinical Laboratories, LLC, Moraine, OH, which is the pilot site for the new solution.
Mark Shearer, MCLT, MT(ASCP), CompuNet’s Chemistry Director, and his staff worked closely with the CAP as they had already implemented new processes and self-checks to reduce non-patient-related clerical errors. His team has been inputting and sending PT data as part of the e-LAB Solutions Connect pilot since late 2011.
“What used to take four hours, now takes two minutes,” Shearer said. In turn, the added efficiency will enable the laboratory to treat PT more like a patient sample.
The CAP began the development of e-LAB Solutions Connect in direct response to many customers’ requests to electronically submit PT data.
“As a result of listening to CAP customers, who are under tremendous pressure in a changing health care landscape, we developed a more convenient way to submit important quality control data,” said Charles Roussel, CAP Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “The CAP, through leadership and innovation, allows laboratory professionals more time to spend on patients and clinicians who rely on their medical testing expertise.”
In partnership with Data Innovations (DI), LLC, South Burlington, VT, the CAP leveraged DI’s Instrument Manager™ to power e-LAB Solutions Connect.
“DI focuses on offering laboratory time-management solutions for both clinical and non-clinical application,” said Mike Epplen, DI’s CEO. “DI, CompuNet, and CAP, through innovation and collaboration, shared and executed a vision to make a proficiency testing requirement more efficient and manageable for laboratory professionals.”
The CAP will roll out e-LAB Solutions Connect in some quantitative Surveys products with automated instruments, such as Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation, in 2013. For more information, visit www.cap.org/eLabConnect (going live July 16).
