CAP Launches Automated Professional Practice Evaluation System
Northfield, IL—The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has launched Evalumetrics, a Web-based professional practice evaluation system that facilitates competency assessment of medical practitioners. Evalumetrics automates data collection and analysis for management of Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) and delivers reports that demonstrate the quality standards of a pathology practice. The Joint Commission (TJC) requires OPPE/FPPE monitoring of providers for TJC accreditation.
Complete with a wide use range of metrics, the online Evalumetrics tool allows internal benchmarking and quality management unlike other options available today.
“The customized Evalumetrics reports tell the story of competency and quality in a clear and concise way for OPPE/FPPE compliance” said Donald Karcher, MD, FCAP, member of the CAP’s Quality Practices Committee which led the system’s development. “Evalumetrics can help demonstrate—through objective evidence—the level of excellence that providers, such as pathologists, bring to hospitals, laboratories, and patients.”
OPPE is an ongoing period of evaluating privilege-specific indicators of performance for all practitioners. FPPE is a limited or focused period of assessment and is used to evaluate new medical staff, when new medical privileges are requested, or when there is a need to reassess competency for an existing privilege.
“In developing the system and the metrics, we collaborated with dozens of CAP scientific committees,” said Raouf Nakhleh, MD, FCAP, QPC Chair. “The process lent critical analysis and rigor to the creation of an innovative tool for monitoring performance.”
Users can customize Evalumetrics to meet their needs in:
- Selecting and assigning metrics for anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and procedural practice areas
- Entering providers for monitoring
- Entering data
- Generating reports
The system can include an unlimited number of metrics. The CAP chose to develop metrics based on the six core competency areas for medical practice, as defined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Medical Specialties that are related to the practice of pathology.
“Although the CAP embodiment includes metrics developed specifically for pathology, this foundational quality software application can accommodate specialty metrics associated with other medical specialties that comply with the OPPE/FPPE mandate of TJC,” Charles Roussel, CAP CEO, said.
