Houston Pathologist Named Frank C. Coleman Award for Public Service Winner by College of American Pathologists
Northfield, IL.— Richard J. Hausner, MD, FCAP, of Houston was honored
for his outstanding dedication to political and community life and for his
extraordinary public service throughout the nation at a ceremony held in
Chicago at CAP ’05—the annual meeting of the College of American
Pathologist—on Sept. 11, 2005.
Dr. Hausner received the Frank C. Coleman Award for Public Service through his
work on the CAP Political Action Committee, the Council on Government and
Professional Affairs, and in other areas. Dr. Hausner has worked steadily as
an advocate to help ensure the College meets its legislative goals.
"I am honored to have received the Coleman Award from my peers at the
College," said Dr. Hausner. "I am thrilled that my colleagues understand and
share my passion to promote pathology through mentorship and education to help
explain the vital role pathologists play in patient health wellness."
Dr. Hausner's conscientious attention to patient care and his dedication to
the College and its programs were recognized in 1992 when he received the CAP
Foundation Herbert Lansky Memorial Award. He has also received the George T.
Caldwell Distinguished Service Award in 2000 sponsored by the Texas Society of
Pathologists.
Dr. Hausner served on the Board of Governors for the College from 1996-2002
and was a Texas delegate to the House of Delegates from 1984-1996. He returned
to the House in 2003 as foreman of the Texas Delegation. He has been a member
of numerous CAP committees, including the PAC Board of Directors, Commission
on Laboratory Accreditation, Government Affairs Committee, Nominating
Committee, Medical Community Relations committee, CAP Foundation Advisory
Board, and the HOD Nominating Committee.
Dr. Hausner is a past president of the Houston Society of Clinical
Pathologists and the Texas Society of Pathologists. He has also served as a
trustee of the American Pathology Foundation. He has served as president of
the Harris County Medical Society and is a current trustee of the Gulf Coast
regional Blood Center.
He earned his BA degree from Brooklyn College and received his MD from State
University of New York, Upstate Medical Center. Dr. Hausner completed his
internship in pediatrics at the University of Michigan and served in the U.S.
Navy as a lieutenant before entering his pathology residency at University of
Florida.
Academics are also part of Dr. Hausner's life work. He is currently clinical
professor of pathology at both Baylor College of Medicine and the University
of Texas Medical School at Houston, in addition to being chair of the
department of pathology at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center. He is an
associate editor of the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr.
Hausner is an experienced speaker on subjects related to payment in pathology
practice and is often invited to speak at pathology symposia and academic
departments.
The College of American Pathologists is a
medical society that serves nearly 16,000 physician members and the laboratory
community throughout the world. It is the world's largest association composed
exclusively of pathologist and is widely considered the leader in laboratory
quality assurance. The CAP is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective
patient care.
