CAP Launches First in a Series of Online
Quality Management System Educational Courses
(Northfield, IL) The College of American Pathologists (CAP) announced the release of a series of interactive,
online educational courses designed to help laboratories enhance their existing quality management systems and to
help them make quality a strategic business initiative.
Noting a growing need for laboratory-focused quality management resources such as these, CAP is designing these courses
with the specific needs of the medical laboratory in mind.
This first course in the series, titled “15189 Walkthrough,” summarizes and interprets ISO 15189 via informative
text and video clips by CAP experts.
“Many US laboratories have reached a high level of technical excellence in their testing operations,” said
Cordelia E. Sever, MD, FCAP, chair of the CAP 15189 committee and Director of Clinical Pathology, Pathology Associates of
Albuquerque, NM. “Now it is time to raise the bar and learn to better address additional customer priorities in the
pre- and post-analytical components such as fast, reliable turn-around times using quality management systems.”
Dr. Sever added, “The College of American Pathologists is now offering user-friendly, online, on-demand access
educational programs. Previously not available, these programs are increasingly appreciated by busy people, enabling
them to learn at their own pace on their own time.”
Additional courses are under development and will be released in the coming months. Topics will cover a step-by-step guide
to implementing a quality management system; document control requirements with examples; how to write an effective quality
manual; ways to measure, analyze, and set goals with senior management; and internal auditing and root cause analysis,
which are believed to be the remedy for reoccurring laboratory issues and improved patient safety.
