CAP@Your Service – July
2008
With the full implementation of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ National Provider Identifier (NPI) registry complete, now, for the first-time, NPIs are required in the secondary provider field. “To assist those billing providers, who, after reasonable efforts, are still unable to obtain NPIs for secondary providers, Medicare has instituted a temporary measure that allows billing providers to use their own NPI in secondary identifier fields. Thus, providers are not unduly burdened to ensure secondary identifier fields have an NPI.”
