From James M. Crawford, MD, PhD, FCAP 2007-2008 President, Association of Pathology Chairs, Inc.
“I got into a lengthy conversation with two attendees [at the CAP Residents Forum Reception in September 2007] about the job market. In follow-up to that conversation (and my pledge to them), please find attached a modestly redacted version of the talk I gave to ADASP in March 2007. The basic idea for gathering these data was: “What is the job market and what does a potential employer need to know?”
The synthesis of data from the ASCP RISE survey instrument, the CAP survey (Archives Pathol 2007), and Bruce Alexander’s Hum Path article (2006) makes for reassuring conclusions:
- there are a satisfactory number of jobs in both the private and academic sectors.
- for the most part, these sectors seem to be “right-sized”, although effort is required to find the right fit.
I offer you this for posting in the CAP Residents Online Community as you see fit. I do not plan on publishing these data, as it is simply a compilation of previously available information. So I yield the ‘intellectual property,’ such as it is.”
