  Direct Payment for
  Pathology Services

The College of American Pathologists supports legislation, regulation, or other government action which would require that payment for all pathology services, including both anatomic and clinical pathology, be made only to the person or entity which performed or supervised the service—with an exception for referrals between laboratories that are independent of a physician’s office.

In the absence of a direct payment requirement, the College supports legislation, regulation, or other government action that would require that discounts or other reductions in price to purchasing physicians be disclosed and appropriately reflected in charges to the patient or insurer.
