The past decade has seen tremendous advances in the treatment and understanding of the genetics of colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Advanced ancillary testing, including immunohistochemical and molecular investigation, has become crucial for patient treatment and management. This course, directed at practicing pathologists, residents, and fellows, will provide a comprehensive, practical overview of CRC molecular biology and how it relates to clinical practice. Particular emphasis will focus on the role of mismatch repair (MMR) and microsatellite instability (MSI) investigation with current recommendations and practice patterns. Faculty will also discuss other molecular investigations (EGFR, KRAS, BRAF), outlining when to perform investigations and what the results mean to the practicing pathologist.
You will learn to:
- Apply and interpret immunohistochemical stains to assess for mismatch repair (MMR) gene proteins
- Integrate microsatellite instability (MSI) molecular findings with immunohistochemical and morphologic findings
- Discuss genetic implications of MMR and MSI investigation
- Recognize the role of molecular testing, including EGFR, KRAS, and BRAF in the management of colorectal carcinoma
