Immunohistochemical studies are increasingly being used to aid in the diagnostic evaluation of breast lesions. In this lecture-based microsession, faculty will review the utility of myoepithelial cell markers for the assessment of stromal invasion, the role of E-cadherin in distinguishing ductal from lobular carcinoma, and the role of high molecular weight cytokeratins in the evaluation of intraductal proliferations. The course will emphasize potential pitfalls in interpretation and will discuss both common as well as less recognized (but often more challenging) sources of diagnostic error. The presenter will review correlative morphologic features to help you interpret confusing or indeterminate immunohistochemical results. You will gain an understanding of the appropriate settings in which these immunohistochemical studies may be diagnostically helpful and an appreciation of their uses and limitations in daily practice.
