AP117  Infectious Disease Challenges in Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology

2:00–4:00 pm
2.0 CME CREDITS

Medical Knowledge Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

Accurate and timely diagnosis of infectious entities in tissue and cytologic preparations requires recognition of characteristic morphologic features, formulation of an appropriate differential diagnosis, and interpretation of ancillary stains and studies. In this practical case-based course, faculty will present a spectrum of common infectious entities with an accompanying discussion of diagnostic approaches. The presentation will focus on common challenges, such as differentiation of yeasts in respiratory specimens, recognition of bacteria and their mimickers in tissue, and selection and interpretation of special stains (eg, Warthin-Starry silver stain for spirochetes, tissue Gram stain, Ziehl-Neelsen stain). The course will provide a pragmatic diagnostic approach for daily practice with an emphasis on developing a differential diagnosis, recognizing infectious mimickers, and making full use of the available resources.
