Identification of infectious entities in dermatopathology requires recognition of characteristic morphologic features, formulation of an appropriate differential diagnosis, and interpretation of ancillary stains and studies. Faculty will present a spectrum of common infectious entities with accompanying discussion of diagnostic approaches. The course will focus on common challenges, such as differentiation of yeasts from infectious mimickers and parasites, recognition and identification of viral inclusions, and selection and interpretation of special stains (eg, tissue Gram stain, Ziehl-Neelsen). Faculty will provide a pragmatic diagnostic approach for daily practice with an emphasis on developing a differential diagnosis and making full use of available resources.
