Evaluation of genitourinary specimens is an integral aspect for most practicing surgical pathologists. Many nonneoplastic entities of the kidney, bladder, and prostate can be mistaken or may confuse diagnosis and reporting of malignancy. Knowledge of these benign mimickers will not only help avoid misdiagnosis but it also will facilitate work-up and minimize unnecessary ancillary procedures in arriving at an accurate diagnosis. Most surgical pathologists are uncomfortable with diagnosing nonneoplastic renal diseases and unaware of their importance in renal cancer patients. Therefore, this Video Microscopy Tutorial will provide a practical approach that participants can apply in their daily practice.
You will learn to:
- Diagnose nonneoplastic diseases that can mimic malignancy in nephrectomy, transurethral resections, cystectomy, prostatectomy, or cystoprostatectomy specimens
- Diagnose common nonneoplastic renal diseases in tumor nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy specimens
- Evaluate specific renal pathologic parameters that predict clinical outcomes
