NEW AP100 A Pattern-Based Approach to Diagnosis of Nonneoplastic Lung Disease

This course provides a framework for approaching the surgical lung biopsy in patients with diffuse parenchymal lung disease (“interstitial lung disease”) and emphasizes the critical importance of clinical and radiological data in the assessment of lung histopathology. The presenter will address establishing a differential diagnoses using the clinical tempo of disease and CT findings, and then present and correlate six histopathologic patterns of disease with the clinical and imaging data to arrive at a differential diagnosis and favored diagnosis among limited possibilities. The course will include classic examples in detail, as well as diagnostic challenge cases for self assessment. Participants should have basic knowledge of lung anatomy and the ability to recognize the histopathologic elements of inflammatory reactions. Following this session, participants may complete a related online self-assessment module, available at cap.org through December 31, 2013.

- Recognize the clinical tempo of the patient’s lung disease and integrate this information into the final diagnosis
- Recognize key radiological findings and their importance to the histopathology observed in biopsy specimens
- Identify six general histopathologic patterns of disease in surgical lung biopsies
- Integrate the above data into a clinically relevant differential diagnosis or specific named disease
