The diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and myeloproliferative neoplasms has evolved from a morphologic evaluation to incorporating immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, and molecular genetic studies. This course will summarize the 2008 World Health Organization classification of myeloid neoplasms and will describe a systematic method for using morphology with ancillary studies to classify and determine prognosis in AML, MDS, and myeloproliferative neoplasms. You will learn when to order specific studies using an algorithmic approach and how to incorporate the findings into a comprehensive report. Faculty also will address coming advances in the diagnosis and prognosis of myeloid neoplasms so that you are aware of future testing for these diseases.
