Needle core biopsy currently represents the initial diagnostic procedure in many patients with breast lesions. The limited tissue sampling creates a unique set of diagnostic problems and interpretive pitfalls. This case-based course will illustrate diagnostic problems in breast needle core biopsy samples. Topics include intraductal proliferative, papillary, fibroepithelial, columnar cell, spindle cell, and vascular lesions; small glandular proliferations; and problematic in-situ lesions. For each lesion type, faculty will emphasize common diagnostic difficulties and pitfalls and, where applicable, will consider the use and limitations of adjunctive immunostains. The clinical implications of rendering these diagnoses in the needle core biopsy setting will also be addressed.
