Recent technological advancements have led to the development of new diagnostic tools that are significantly impacting the microbiology and molecular diagnostics laboratory. Due to their acute nature and difficult identification, microorganisms infecting the lower respiratory tract are particularly important targets. In this case-based approach, faculty will discuss the identification of microorganisms implicated in pneumonia, focusing particularly on the application of new technologies such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and whole-genome sequencing to supplement conventional testing in the microbiology laboratory.
