This course will provide a review of key entities in head and neck cytopathology with an emphasis on practical diagnostic issues, including thyroid, salivary gland, and cysts. Faculty will focus on common challenges and pitfalls that are encountered and how to avoid diagnostic errors. The session will cover certain important applications of fine-needle aspiration (FNA), such as the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and the use of the AUS/FLUS category, the distinction of morphologically similar salivary gland tumors, as well as the evaluation of challenging cystic head and neck lesions. Faculty also will review the use of ancillary studies where appropriate.
