In this course, faculty will review basic molecular principles related to the development and progression of soft tissue tumors. Histomorphologic and immunophenotypic features of connective tissue neoplasms are discussed in correlation with specific molecular alterations observed in these tumors. The course will emphasize the practical applications of these principles in relation to the appropriate ordering and interpretation of molecular diagnostic tests, integrating theoretical principles with practical applications through presentation of actual clinical cases. Lastly, faculty will discuss current aspects of personalized medicine and the application of advanced molecular testing, utilizing mutational analysis of c-kit in GIST as a model for targeted therapy in soft tissue neoplasms, among other tumors of connective tissues.
