CP100 Practical Challenges in Peripheral Blood Smear Evaluation

The peripheral blood smear often shows signs of important systemic or hematopoietic derangements in a patient. It should come as no surprise that the significance and workup of many peripheral blood morphologic findings in 2011 differ in some respects from the traditional understanding. Using a case-based approach, faculty will focus on newly described entities and changes in classification criteria for well-known disorders, including neutropenia, lymphocytosis, eosinophilia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. The course will emphasize morphologic “pearls” and diagnostic requirements. Faculty will discuss the significance of abnormal findings based on flow cytometric, fluorescence in situ hybridization, cytogenetic, and molecular analyses. Review basic principles of diagnosis by peripheral blood smear morphology as you update your knowledge of the diagnostic and biologic significance of certain findings. Following this session, participants may complete a related online self-assessment module, available through December 31, 2012. More details will be provided in the course. You will learn to:
- Recognize new causes and considerations for acute onset of neutropenia
- Discuss evolving pathobiological features of highlighted anemias and thrombocytopenias and the application of this knowledge to clinical pathology
- Utilize 2008 WHO classification criteria and an effective testing algorithm for the diagnosis and prognostication of chronic lymphocytic leukemia
- Describe benign and neoplastic entities that can be diagnosed without bone marrow evaluation based on assimilation of peripheral blood morphology, clinical findings, and specialized testing
