Recent technological advances are making on-site molecular testing for infectious diseases an achievable goal for an increasing number of community-based laboratories. Concurrently, changes in diagnostic algorithms and advances in therapies are affecting the utilization and interpretation of commonly encountered, specialized molecular microbiology tests. In this discussion of current assays, practicing pathologists and trainees will gain the skills to evaluate molecular tests for incorporation into the community-based clinical laboratory. Faculty will focus on understanding current molecular technologies and evaluating clinical utility. In addition, they will explore recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of specific infections, including HIV and HCV, with special emphasis on the implications for molecular test utilization and interpretation.
