CP105 Thyroid Testing: Key Clinical and Laboratory Controversies

Thyroid diseases are among the most common problems facing pathologists and other physicians. Clinicians are very dependent on the clinical laboratory for diagnosis of thyroid disease, but several key clinical and laboratory issues remain controversial. These include the reference interval for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and the routine testing of pregnant women for thyroid disease and what reference intervals to use. This microsession will examine these two topics and update participants on current clinical and laboratory practice and controversies in this field. The presenter will also review the methodologies available for thyroid hormone measurement. Discussion will emphasize clinical aspects and factors that affect laboratory result interpretation.
