This half-day course will address advances in hemostasis to help pathologists provide up-to-date clinical consultations. Direct oral anticoagulants are rapidly replacing warfarin. The faculty will describe the pharmacology of these drugs, their affects on coagulation tests, and the limitations for monitoring them. The clinical utility of monitoring platelet responsiveness to aspirin and clopidogrel continues to evolve with new tests and clinical studies. The faculty will provide recommendations based on the most current evidence. In addition, faculty will highlight misunderstood coagulation procedures that directly affect patients, including D-dimer test and therapeutic heparin monitoring. Using case studies, the faculty also will review appropriate situations to investigate thrombophilia, what tests to perform, and how to interpret the results.
