The US is confronting an epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Collaboration between physicians treating chronic pain and the laboratory has been identified as a key point of intervention to reduce the risks of abuse, misuse, and diversion of these drugs. Through interactive, engaging case studies that illustrate the key curriculum objectives, course participants will gain: 1) background on chronic opioid therapy and its challenges; 2) understanding laboratory testing including the limitations of the specimen collection protocols and analytical methodologies; 3) a solid knowledge-base to interpret test results; and 4) a framework for clinical consultations on drug compliance.
