CP114  Challenges for Rapid Testing in Microbiology

Demand for rapid testing to detect microorganisms is increasing in all clinical settings since rapid results have important implications for patient care, infection control, and public health. Witness the use of rapid tests to identify influenza viruses and the increasing use of rapid HIV antibody tests to meet CDC guidelines for increased HIV testing. Through case studies and discussions of available testing methods, this course will help you evaluate when rapid testing for microorganisms is most appropriate. Faculty will discuss advantages and limitations of testing methodologies including newer molecular methods. The session will address the accurate interpretation of rapid test results and clinical utilization to promote effective treatment decisions and improve patient care.
