PM106  Building a Culture of Patient Safety: The Role of Pathologist Leadership

2:00–4:00 pm
2.0 CME CREDITS

Patient Care Interpersonal and Communication Skills

The laboratory should have an explicit, integrated quality system that builds a culture focused on patient safety. This plan should include scope, roles, responsibilities, and reporting relationships; quality planning and risk assessment; budgeting and resources; quality review and assessment; and management review. The role of the laboratory’s leadership, especially pathologists, cannot be underestimated. It includes functional relationships (quality, technical, operations, and support), articulated roles and responsibilities, and attributes for effective leadership. Course participants will engage in helping to devise a plan for pathologist leaders in establishing a culture of safety, including aligning the plan with organizational goals, implementing a comprehensive quality management system, and defining attributes of an effective, transformational leader.
