The practice of anatomic pathology now requires more than just rendering a tissue diagnosis. Pathologists must also provide consultation regarding testing strategies before biopsy, as well as information about prognosis and targeted therapy after the diagnosis is made. In endocrine pathology, immunoassays for hormones remain a key component of the decision to perform a biopsy, fine-needle aspiration, or surgical resection, and molecular pathology testing has emerged as an important adjunct to the traditional gross and microscopic exam. This course will provide surgical pathologists with a multidisciplinary look at initial laboratory testing and appropriate follow-up of common endocrine tumors and some uncommon endocrine disorders. Using real patient case histories, faculty will discuss issues and implications and will integrate results of clinical chemistry and molecular testing with surgical pathology and cytopathology findings. Following this session, participants may complete a related online self-assessment module, available through December 31, 2012. More details will be provided in the course.
