Lung cancer classification is receiving greater attention with the recognition that histologic diversity in lung cancer has therapeutic consequences. This emphasis on classification not only underscores the broad categories of adenocarcinoma and squamous carcinoma within non-small cell carcinoma, but potentially redefines uncommon tumors such as large cell carcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma. The lesson of the new classification schemes is that pathologists as “lumpers” and “splitters” may both be correct; consequently, categories have different relevance when looked at from morphologic, prognostic, and predictive perspectives.
Glass-slide case studies of uncommon tumors will serve as the platform for discussion of lung cancer classification. Cases selected from gray areas in classification will solidify existing classification while demonstrating the current classification of problem cases. Participants will apply classification and its molecular, predictive, and prognostic impact to routine and challenging cases alike in this video microscopy tutorial.
