This video microscopy tutorial uses a case-based approach to review key aspects of head and neck cytopathology with an emphasis on practical diagnostic issues. It will focus on common challenges and pitfalls that pathologists encounter and how to avoid diagnostic errors. The session will cover selected applications of fine-needle aspiration (FNA), such as the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and the use of the AUS/FLUS category, the distinction of morphologically similar salivary gland tumors, and the evaluation of challenging cystic head and neck lesions. The presenter will also review the appropriate use of ancillary studies in this open discussion of practical issues in head and neck cytology.
