NEW  AP133  The Placenta—A Diary of Gestation

Wednesday, October 16
1:00–3:00 PM

Medical Knowledge Patient Care

Pathologists often receive placenta specimens. They have diagnostic value for the current pregnancy, as well as predictive value for subsequent pregnancies. Often they will help explain a poor outcome and help defend the obstetrician in malpractice suits. However, placental diagnosis is often difficult for the general pathologist, and many pertinent diagnoses are not recognized. A former practicing board-certified OB/GYN, currently a practicing gynecologic and pediatric pathologist, will use a case-study format and incorporate clinical correlations to make this course more pertinent to general pathologists who receive placentas, as well as pathology residents. Topics covered will include lesions associated with stillbirth, neurologic damage, infection, and poor perinatal outcomes with risk of recurrence in future pregnancies.
