CP110  Strategies on Reducing Transfusions: Anemia Management and CPOE

Tuesday, October 15
2:00–5:30 PM

Patient Care Medical Knowledge

Preoperative anemia and transfusion are independently associated with increased morbidity and mortality in elective surgery. Managing anemia may mitigate these risks. Pathologists are ideally positioned to develop a preoperative anemia management program at their hospital. A successful program can lay the foundation for managing anemia in nonsurgical patients who have anemia as a comorbidity. The course describes how pathologists can identify and manage anemia in both surgical and medical patients. In cases in which transfusion is considered, implementation of transfusion guidelines helps ensure appropriate transfusion decisions. Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) provides a tool for effective guideline implementation and an opportunity to provide clinical decision support (CDS). The remainder of the course reviews the CPOE literature for transfusion and describes tools used to provide CDS. The role of CPOE in facilitating PBM is discussed.
