System Based Practice Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

Surgical pathology errors have a great potential to cause patient harm. This course will acquaint attendees with how and where errors occur in surgical pathology. Within the framework of the test cycle (preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic), faculty will discuss error-prone areas and the significance and potential remedies of these error types. The course will outline the current knowledge of how to avoid errors and cover specific areas such as specimen identification (at the specimen source and within the lab), diagnostic misinterpretation, report adequacy, and effective communication of results.
