NEW  ST101  The Chief Pathology Information Officer—Getting Pathology Involved in the Electronic Health Record

Sunday, October 13
9:30–11:30 AM
2.0 CME/CE CREDITS

System Based Practice Patient Care

Electronic health records (EHRs) have become the central hubs for all health care information with contributions from all specialties. The shift to the EHR as the primary electronic data system in a health system was expected, but it also poses challenges, risks, and opportunities for our specialty. Most notably, the role of the pathologist as the information manager in a health system may not be readily recognized given the diversity of information now contained in an EHR. The fact remains, however, that laboratory data are among the most actionable data available to a hospital and health system. Pathologist expertise is required but often lacking in EHR implementations. In this course, pathologists will learn how to address gaps in laboratory information management in the EHR stemming from lack of laboratory expertise and to empower themselves to serve as “chief pathology information officers” for their health systems.
