NEW  ST105  Biospecimens and Biorepositories for the Community Pathologist

Monday, October 14
8:00–10:00 AM

Medical Knowledge Patient Care

Pathologists are beginning to realize that they serve as biorepository managers for their community hospitals. In an era of personalized medicine, pathologists must play a key role in seeing that both clinical care and research are properly supported by guaranteeing the quality of biospecimens. Doing so will strengthen the role of the pathologist on the health care team during the emergence of precision/personalized medicine. This course will summarize the findings of the CAP’s Personalized Health Care Committee paper published in Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. Significant aspects of biorepositories and biospecimen quality, including technical requirements, tissue handling, information systems, quality improvement, and business and regulatory issues, will be covered. The presenters will provide an introduction to biorepositories that will serve as a valuable reference to all pathologists interested in quality biospecimens and biorepositories. Learn about newly proposed key standard data elements that hospitals and pathology laboratories should strive to collect, as well as the financial challenges and some financial strategies for the community pathologist.

You will learn to:
