This video microscopy tutorial uses a case-based approach to review key aspects of thyroid and salivary gland cytopathology with an emphasis on practical diagnostic issues. It will focus on common challenges and pitfalls that pathologists encounter and how to avoid diagnostic errors. The session will cover selected applications of fine-needle aspiration (FNA), such as found in the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and the use of the AUS/FLUS category, and the distinction of selected morphologically similar salivary gland tumors. The presenter will also review the appropriate use of ancillary studies.
