Developing specialized expertise in new and growing areas of pathology and embracing emerging technologies are critically important to CAP members. Currently 20% of CAP members collaborate with other physicians using a patient’s genomic information and another 32% are likely or very likely to do so in the next 3 to 5 years. Today, 46% of Members integrate diagnostic information from a variety of sources and disciplines into a clinically relevant report, but another 35% are likely or very likely to do so in the next 3 to 5 years. Here you will find programs, classes and other resources you can use to improve your skills and expand your knowledge base.

Genetic Testing for Alzheimer’s Disease Slow to Catch On Review a medical ethics presentation on this topic prepared by Gail Vance, MD, FCAP - Genetic Medicine, ACO’s and Evidence-based Decision Making are just a few of the Ten innovations that Will Transform Medicine
- Earn the skills you need to transform and succeed. The CAP Institute for the Advancement of the Pathology Specialty (The CAP Institute) offers a range of educational programs, SAMs and free on-demand webinars to help you stay relevant and competitive.
- Take an active role in Electronic Health Record (EHR) planning at your hospital
- Attend a conference or education program devoted to emerging technologies. See a listing of distance and onsite learning opportunities in 2011 related to molecular/whole genome sequencing, whole slide imaging (WSI), in vivo microscopy, personalized health care
- Learn more about genomic medicine and consider how you might develop and apply your skills and clinical knowledge to step into this developing area of clinical need
- Consider a fellowship in an emerging area of care
- Identify additional laboratory skills/capabilities you and your laboratory may need in emerging areas such as personalized and molecular medicine. CAP offers a range of programs and maintains a list of education conferences in the US and abroad on topics of interest to pathologists.
- Get involved in the CAP Module 4 Case for Change research initiative examining the changing economics of pathology practice and service models.
