Research Services

In a healthcare environment that is about to adopt health information technology at record speed and calls from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, and other organizations to bring basic research to the bedside, medical research is no longer conducted in the isolated backrooms of laboratories and research facilities. A push to collaborate and share outcomes, as well as to perform secondary analysis of data, is the present and future state across our entire healthcare system.

But how does a single researcher share data in an accurate and meaningful way? How can secondary analysis be performed with assurance of clarity and quality? How can basic research be translated for more efficient use at the bedside?

CAP STS provides services and products to assist researchers to:

  • Structure data capture, reporting and/or exchange
  • Create HL7 messaging standards for structured data capture
  • Encode data with standard terminologies, such as SNOMED CT® or LOINC®, to achieve semantic interoperability
  • Map data and/or ontologies to standards
  • Map data and/or ontologies to frequently used coding systems, such as ICD-9, ICD-10, or CPT
  • Foster the interoperability of data between a single data collection system and others, including caBIG
  • Create ontologies for specialty domains

Examples of CAP STS Research Collaboration

CAP STS services help researchers to accurately and meaningfully share their data with other researchers as well as clinicians. CAP STS is currently working with a number of research organizations including:

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • University of South Florida (USF), Data Coordinating Center for the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN)
  • National Library of Medicine (NLM)
  • National Primate Research Centers (NPRC)
