CAP SNOMED Terminology Solutions™
SNOMED Terminology Solutions™ (STS), a division of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), is the leading organization in pursuing semantic interoperability for clinically accurate electronic health records (EHRs) by offering customized, best-practice terminology implementation and education services. CAP is the original creator of SNOMED Clinical Terms® (SNOMED CT®)—a globally recognized controlled medical vocabulary—and has fostered its development for more than 40 years. CAP STS continues to develop and maintain SNOMED CT on behalf of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO®). Through its Diagnostic Intelligence and Health Information Technology (DIHIT) member committee and staff department, CAP STS is leading the way for health information technology (HIT) issues and practices such as standardized electronic reporting, including the CAP electronic Cancer Checklists (CAP eCC).
How CAP STS Can Help You
CAP STS offers a comprehensive suite of consulting and education services to help clients evaluate options for deploying and implementing health information standards. The CAP STS team—clinical informatics and technical consultants, clinicians and educators—has expertise that covers many healthcare specialties, including: radiology, pharmacy, pathology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, primary care, and nursing.
CAP STS is also actively involved with health information technology and standards development organizations such as HL7, CCHIT, HITSP, and the IHTSDO. Due to our industry experience and expertise working with terminologies such as SNOMED CT, we are uniquely positioned to offer standards implementation guidance as these requirements are being defined. For example, in August 2009, the HIT Standards Committee, the federal advisory panel on HIT standards, endorsed recommendations on how providers may electronically record a physician’s observations to qualify for federal bonuses—use of SNOMED CT by 2015. In 2010, providers must use SNOMED CT or ICD-9 to qualify; in 2013, they must use SNOMED CT or ICD-10.
CAP STS can demonstrate the best methods for integrating terminology into EHR systems. We take the complexity out of achieving semantic interoperability for your EHR and can steer you away from obstacles associated with implementation projects, saving you time and money.
