On April 1, 2009, the owners of three standards that contain laboratory test terminology – the Logical Observation Identifiers, Names, Codes (LOINC), Nomenclature, Properties and Units (NPU), and the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) – began an operational Trial of prospective divisions of labor in the generation of laboratory test terminology content. This Trial will provide practical experience and important information on opportunities to decrease duplication of effort in the development of laboratory test terminology and to ensure that SNOMED CT works effectively in combination with either LOINC or NPU.

The Diagnostic Intelligence and Health Information Technology Department of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) released the CAP Electronic Cancer Checklists (CAP eCC) for the first time in XML format. The CAP eCC assist pathologists and cancer registrars in collecting data elements reported for the most common forms of cancer and delivering the information necessary for quality patient care.

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation® (IHTSDO) has launched a new IHTSDO Workbench with tools to develop, maintain, and facilitate the use of SNOMED CT in health systems around the world. IHTSDO’s 11 Member nations and other SNOMED CT users will use these tools in a shared web-based environment. The Workbench includes a set of tools that will form the foundation of a multi-lingual modular workbench. The overall environment will initially host terminology browsing, authoring, subset and other reference set management, mapping, and namespace management applications. Users can either work independently or can collaborate on terminology editing, mapping, or other tasks. IHTSDO intends to add additional modules to the Workbench over time and to encourage partners to build and share complementary tools.

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation® (IHTSDO) announces that it will make Affiliate Licenses for the use of SNOMED CT® available to users in low income countries free of charge. This initiative is part of the organization’s commitment to enable broader use of standardized clinical terminologies world-wide. Health care providers and others in the 49 countries categorized as low income economies by the World Bank will be able to obtain SNOMED CT Affiliate Licenses free of charge from the IHTSDO to use the terminology in public health information systems, electronic health records, health research, and other applications as part of the initial phase of a program to expand access to SNOMED CT.

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation® (IHTSDO®) releases the second 2008 International Release of SNOMED Clinical Terms® (SNOMED CT®). It is now available for use, incorporating enhancements which are part of ongoing efforts directed toward facilitating the use of the terminology in electronic health records. The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is renaming its SNOMED International division. The division will now be called SNOMED Terminology Solutions and follows last week’s announcement regarding the formation of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation that acquired the intellectual property rights of SNOMED Clinical Terms,® and its antecedents from the CAP.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advances the federal effort to create electronic health records for Americans within the next decade by making it easier to share drug information electronically. FDA is moving the effort forward by adopting the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED) as the standard computerized medical vocabulary system to be used to electronically code important terms in the Highlights section of prescription drug labeling.
