The test for vitamin D deficiency had been steadily increasing in frequency at Kaiser until pathologist Thomas S. Lorey, MD, FCAP, director of the regional laboratory, Julia Drees, PhD, scientific director of chemistry, and their colleagues decided to confront what had quickly become a drastic case of test overutilization. Their regional laboratories were performing approximately 2,000 vitamin D tests every day.
