The federal government has been partially shutdown for over 30 days, affecting a number of agencies since December 22. However, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), remains open. The CMS’ Medicare Administrative Contractors will still process Medicare claims and pathologists will receive their reimbursement payments for patient services.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) remains closed during the shutdown, since that department is under a different appropriations program. The FDA continues vital and essential activities as government employees are furloughed, but it has stopped routine inspections of pharmaceutical and food manufacturing plants.

As for current and proposed health care regulations, it is unclear whether agencies will extend comment deadlines or make other accommodations as a result of the shutdown.

The CAP continues to monitor the effect of the shutdown on pathologists and relevant government programs and policies.

CAP members can take advantage of the recurring donation feature to fund PathPAC. Recurring donations, which allows pathologists to contribute in frequencies from monthly to annual increments, gives pathologists an option to participate in PathPAC and strengthen pathologists’ voices in the political process.

PathPAC, the CAP’s political action committee, allows pathologists to speak with one voice in the political process and ensure that pathologists are supporting members of Congress who understand and support the practice of pathology. Contributions, including those utilizing the new recurring donation feature, can be made through the CAP’s e-store. Watch pathologists discuss how PathPAC amplifies their voices in Washington, DC.

All contributions to PathPAC are voluntary and CAP members and their families can opt out of contribution without retribution. PathPAC can only be funded by CAP individual members and disbursed to federal candidates for Congress. PathPAC is prohibited from accepting corporate contributions due to federal election law. If you’re interested in making a corporate contribution to support CAP’s advocacy programs, you can contribute to our Political Education Fund. Any donations to the PathPAC or the Political Education Fund are not tax deductible.
