2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award

Established in 2006, the CAP Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes and honors a CAP member who has made a broad and positive impact on the pathology profession through contributions to one or more areas of the organization over an extended period of time.

The College of American Pathologists presents Leonas G. Bekeris, MD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his distinguished service to the CAP's Laboratory Accreditation Program throughout the years. Dr. Bekeris has made significant contributions as the regional commissioner for Region 2 and the International Region.

Dr. Bekeris serves as the CAP's reviewing commissioner for New York and Pennsylvania, deputy regional commissioner for Mexico and Latin America, and a member of the Complaints and Investigations Committee.

The College of American Pathologists presents Earle Smith Collum, MD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program (LAP) throughout the years. Dr. Collum serves on the Complaints and Investigations Committee and the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation. He was a member of the Emerging Technologies Committee (2010–2013) and the Inspection Process Committee (2007–2011). He has been an inspector in the LAP since 1984 and has made significant contributions as the west central regional commissioner since 2005.

Dr. Collum serves as chief of staff and medical director of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

The College of American Pathologists honors Michael A. Graham, MD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions and service to the CAP Laboratory Improvement Programs and for providing his expertise and leadership as a member and chair of the Forensic Pathology Committee and as the CAP liaison to the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME).

Dr. Graham is a professor of pathology at St. Louis University and chief medical examiner for the City of St. Louis. He is also a trusted advocate for the forensic sciences, the pathology profession, and for medicine and science through education and advocacy. Dr. Graham is a nationally recognized expert in forensic pathology, with a special interest in cardiopulmonary pathology, and has authored numerous publications. He is also a winner of many awards and honors, including the Health Professional of the Year and the NAME Outstanding Service Award.

The College of American Pathologists presents Anthony N. Hui, MD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his service to the CAP over the years, specifically for his contributions to the CAP’s Laboratory Accreditation Program. Dr. Hui began as the Arkansas state commissioner in 1999 and then moved into the role of south central regional commissioner where he was responsible for 480 laboratories. Dr. Hui is now the deputy regional commissioner for Taiwan and is responsible for 26 laboratories. He is one of the CAP's most frequent inspectors, performing more than 20 inspections consistently for the past four years. He is also active on CAP committees and other member groups. Dr. Hui serves as chair of the Inspection Process Committee and as a member of the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation and the Council on Accreditation. He previously served as an alternate delegate for Arkansas in the House of Delegates and as a member of the Accreditation Committee and the Continuous Compliance Committee where he coined the term focus factor.

Dr. Hui is the founder of Northwest Arkansas Pathology Associates and serves on the board of directors at Washington Regional Medical System, both in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He also holds emeritus status at Washington Regional Medical Center, where he is the emeritus medical director of its laboratory. Dr. Hui is also a member of the Arkansas Board of Health.

The College of American Pathologists presents Juan C. Millan, MD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his service over the years to the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program.

Having made many significant contributions to the CAP’s premier accreditation program for laboratories, Dr. Millan has been the deputy commissioner for systems since 2006.

He served on the Complaints and Investigation Committee (2007–2015) and currently serves on the Inspection Process Committee. Other service to the CAP includes his participation in the CAP's House of Delegates as a delegate since 2003.

Dr. Millan has been a pathologist for 42 years. He was a fellow (1972–1975) and pathology faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1975–1989). Since 1989, Dr. Millan has been director of laboratories at Legacy Health, located in Portland, Oregon, where he now serves as its clinical vice president of diagnostics.

The College of American Pathologists presents Gene P. Siegal, MD, PhD, FCAP, with the 2017 CAP Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his many years of distinguished service to the pathology community and the CAP. Dr. Siegal is a renowned experimental and diagnostic pathologist who has published and reviewed numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, scientific letters, monograph chapters, and other scholarly works. As a reviewer for more than 20 journals in the field, he served in the late 1980s as associate editor of the CAP’s Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (Archives) and currently serves as a section editor for the Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology section of Archives. Dr. Siegal has published nine books; two of them are key publications for the CAP: Laboratory Administration for Pathologists and Quality Management in Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Siegal served on the Publications Committee for 10 years as a member, advisor, vice chair, and chair. With his strong leadership, he helped revitalize and raise the CAP’s visibility as a producer of quality publications in the field. In addition, Dr. Siegal was a long-time member of the Surgical Pathology Committee, a member of the Council on Education and the CAP User Experience Panel, and an elected member of the House of Delegates.

Dr. Siegal currently serves as the Robert W. Mowry Endowed Professor of Pathology and the executive chair of pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Medicine.
