Veronica E. Klepeis, MD, PhD, FCAP
Dr. Klepeis has been nominated for her outstanding contributions to pathology informatics standards and her sustained leadership in advancing structured cancer reporting with the CAP.
Throughout her career, Dr. Klepeis has made significant national and international contributions to pathology informatics, advancing standardization, usability, and interoperability in cancer data reporting. As chair of the CAP Pathology Electronic Reporting Committee (PERT), one of her most significant contributions has been development of a foundational master template to align more than 100 CAP cancer protocols—spanning at least 13 organ systems—within a shared structure. She also led efforts to improve usability and workflow by refining and reducing queries within the protocols. In addition, she served as a lead expert for the development of a major software system designed to produce aligned human- and machine-readable versions of the protocols. Known as the Single Source Product (SSP), the system is now in international use and represents a significant advancement in digital pathology standards, with the potential to serve as a sustainable revenue resource for the CAP.
Dr. Klepeis’s work with the CAP has influenced interoperability standards and optimized electronic cancer protocols (eCP) used across major laboratory information systems. CAP protocols have been recommended as the gold-standard reporting framework for the United States Core Data for Interoperability Plus (USCDI+) Cancer Registries Use Case.
Her work has promoted structured data, interoperability, and digital pathology into routine practice, helping ensure that future generations of physicians are equipped with the informatics expertise necessary to advance patient care and research in an increasingly data-driven health care environment.
