Anil V. Parwani, MD, PhD, MBA, FCAP
Dr. Parwani is an internationally recognized leader in digital pathology whose work has transformed the practice of pathology and advanced the integration of technology into diagnostic medicine. His early recognition of the limitations of traditional glass slide workflows led him to pioneer the adoption of whole‑slide imaging (WSI), helping to shift pathology toward a digital, collaborative discipline.
Dr. Parwani played a central role in establishing clinical guidelines for whole‑slide imaging, enabling the safe and effective implementation of telepathology, digital archives, and international research collaboration. These efforts set foundational standards that have been widely adopted across the profession. At The Ohio State University, he became the nation’s first pathologist to sign out clinical cases using digital pathology and led the institution’s enterprise-wide implementation of digital workflows—creating a model that has since been emulated by academic medical centers nationwide.
He has also been at the forefront of integrating AI into pathology practice. Through research, advocacy, and implementation, Dr. Parwani has demonstrated how AI can enhance diagnostic accuracy, reduce inter‑observer variability, and improve efficiency, directly supporting improved patient care. His work in cancer diagnostics, in particular, links digital pathology with molecular and clinical data to advance precision medicine.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Parwani has trained pathologists worldwide through lectures, workshops, and publications, fostering innovation and technical excellence across several practitioners. His sustained commitment to advancing digital pathology, championing responsible integration of AI, and promoting global collaboration has fundamentally reshaped the discipline and expanded access to advanced diagnostic capabilities.
Dr. Parwani is the Donald A. Senhauser chair of the department of pathology, chief of pathology services for the health system, and distinguished professor of pathology and biomedical informatics at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
